Description

East Haddam, CT- Bank of New England at Goodspeed's Landing $1 18__ as G2 Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
The bank opened in 1853, initially operating under the state's free banking laws. It later reverted to being a chartered bank and remained so until it became the National Bank of New England of East Haddam in 1865. This note is from the bank's original free bank period with the state banking die at right and a signature line for the register at left. The design also features a vignette of the steamboat City of Hartford passing Gelston House at center and a portrait of William L. Storrs at left. The piece is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock which was likely at one time attached to an archive book card of Danforth, Wright & Co. There are ten small punch cancels in the signature lines. This note and its three sheetmates (another $1, a $2, and a $5) were not in the Connecticut section of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, but were part of lot 1900 (on back of a Bank of Memphis, Tennessee sheet). At present we believe that those two $1s represent the entire surviving population of free bank format $1s in Proof form.
