Description
Nearly Unique Tuscaloosa Female College $100
Tuscaloosa, AL- Tuscaloosa Female College $100 Oct. 1, 1874
Gunther-Derby AO-458-$100a PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.The school traced its roots at least as far back as 1860 and remained in business well into the early decades of the 20th century. While at first appearing to be "just another college note," this was evidently a promissory note of sorts that paid 8% interest and was redeemable three years from date of issue, at the proprietor's option, and in five years, on demand, in U.S. currency. It was also receivable for tuition and board at 105% of face value. This note appears to have served as the plate note in the 2020 Gunther-Derby Alabama state catalog. The note is well designed, resembling, in more than one way, national bank notes of the era. Very rare and unusual. This note crossed the auction block two decades ago for an amazing $3,450. Our conservative low estimate will allow the market to determine its value in today's market.
