Description

Marion, AL- Selma, Marion and Memphis Railroad Co. 25¢ Mar. 1, 1871 Gunther-Derby AO-299-$.25a Remainder PMG Choice About Unc 58.
The Selma, Marion & Memphis Railroad was originally chartered as the Marion & Alabama River Transportation Co. In February 1854, its name was changed to the Marion Railroad Co. The organization would undergo several other name changes before finally bearing the title printed on this note beginning in 1868. Eventually, the Southern Railway System absorbed this railroad. At center on this piece is a beautiful green "25" overprint. A lovely green back with a cotton plant at center is also present. At bottom right on the face lies the facsimile signature of N(athaniel) B(edford) Forrest, famous Confederate general who participated in several business ventures after the war. PMG mentions the note was previously mounted.
