Description

Charleston, SC- Bank of the State of South Carolina 10¢; 25¢ (2); 50¢ 1861-62 Fine-Very Fine.
The bank, which served as the state's fiscal agent throughout the Civil War, issued a variety of fractional notes through the early part of the war. Included in this lot is a 25¢ note that served as a commemorative issue, depicting Fort Sumter in flames with the state flag flying over the fort. with the text Fort Sumter April 13, 1861 below. The note is dated April 15, 1861 but was probably issued a little later, providing time for the note to be authorized, designed, printed, and issued. This note is hammer canceled and has a post war rubberstamp on the back regarding extensive litigation that occurred regarding the bank's ability to declare bankruptcy and its practices for determining creditor payment priorities. The other 25¢, which is hammer canceled, depicts a gamecock and is printed on the back of a remainder sheet of Louisville, Cincinnati & Charleston Rail Road Company notes with portions of a $1-1/4 denomination visible. The 50¢ note, which is also hammer canceled, is printed on the back of a sheet of 1854 remainder notes from the failed Manufacturers and Mechanics Bank of Columbus, GA. (Total: 4 notes)
