Important Mississippi "Cotton Pledged" Note Warrant

Jackson, MS- Auditor's Warrant $750 Mar. 12, 1862 Fine.
This is an extremely important historical item that details how cotton was to be handled to provide security for the Mississippi "Cotton Pledged" Treasury Notes. The recipient promises to "safely keep and deliver the said cotton...." to E.M. Apperson a prominent Memphis merchant when a proclamation by the Governor so directs under the terms of "An Act authorizing the ISSUANCE OF TREASURY NOTES as advances upon Cotton, approved December 19, 1861." The proceeds were to be subject to the Governor's order, and the cotton was to remain at the recipient's risk until sold. The warrant was for $750 as an advance on thirty bales of cotton. The warrant is printed on gray paper that has been mounted to a white paper stub and is hammer canceled four times.
