Description

Philadelphia, PA- Bank of the United States of America Stock Certificate 20 Shares Oct. 24, 1837 Very Fine.
A fully issued stock certificate from this historically important institution. Historians remember that President Andrew Jackson, the philosophical leader of the 1830s "Occupy Philadelphia" movement, vowed war on this bank (owned and run by the "1 percent" of its time) and succeeded in destroying the bank by vetoing its charter renewal in 1832 and depriving it of government deposits thereafter. While successful in ruining the bank, its demise was a proximate cause in triggering the Panic of 1837, the worst financial reversal suffered since the founding of the republic, an event that threw many workers into poverty and impoverished numerous small enterprises. N(icholas) Biddle signed this stock certificate as president. There is a small amount of ink erosion. Some age toning and light foxing is also observed.
