Description

Charleston, SC- Peoples Bank of South Carolina $5 Feb. 6, 1854 Very Good-Fine;
Newberry, SC- Bank of Newberry, South Carolina $5 Jan. 3, 1854 Very Good-Fine.
The Peoples Bank of South Carolina was incorporated in 1852, survived the Civil War and its aftermath, and became the Peoples National Bank of Charleston in 1865, with D.L. McKay recorded as President of both banks circa 1865-66. The $5 design features a center vignette of a herd of cattle and sheep as well as a rare pre-war portrait of future CSA Secretary of the Treasury Christopher G. Memminger. One of the scarcer Charleston banks and always popular.
The Bank of Newberry was organized in late 1852 and nominally remained in business, at least on paper, until 1870. News reports in 1870 indicated that the bank was redeeming its circulation at par in United States currency as early as November 29, 1869. The $5 depicts a group of people gazing at a train flanked by two portraits. (Total: 2 notes)
