Gideon Welles Autographed Letter as Secretary of the Navy. May 19, 1862. Not graded.Welles, whose nickname was "Father Neptune", served from 1861 to 1869 in his capacity as Secretary of the Navy. Welles' father, Samuel, and Gideon himself, both have long and storied biographies in public life that are worthy of much further exploration than what we have to offer here. This letter is addressed to Captain Andrew A. Harwood, U.S. Navy, Washington, D.C. Harwood was a great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin. Commander Stribling refers to Cornelius K. Stribling, a seasoned veteran whose military service harkened to the War of 1812. This letter reads:
"Sir,
You are hereby appointed a Member of a Board of Officers for the purpose of witnessing the examination of the several classes of Acting Midshipmen, at New Port, R.I.
For this purpose, you will proceed, without delay, and report to Comm. Stribling, President of the Board, at that place.
I am respectfully your able servant Gideon Welles."
A bright and clean document with clearly legible writing. The verso shows a notation....."19th May / 62. from Secy of Navy appointing me a member of board to witness examination of midshipmen.
