Description

Jefferson City, MO- State of Missouri (Secessionist) $3 (2) Jan. 1, 1862 Cr. 9 Fine;
Jefferson City, MO- State of Missouri (Secessionist) $5 Jan. 1, 1862 Cr. 5A Very Good-Fine;
Jefferson City, MO- State of Missouri $169.46 Dec. 4, 1874 Cr. UG51 Very Fine.
While the first three notes are datelined Jefferson City, this was just wishful thinking as the secessionist state government had fled the city at the beginning of the war on June 15, 1861 and never returned, finishing the war in Marshall, TX. These notes were, in fact, all issued "from the back of a horse" as the civil government roamed the state in the company of Confederate forces during the war. The back of the $5 note is stamped Prior to 1st Nov. 1861. The purpose of this stamp is unclear at present.
The 1874 piece was issued by the state to settle war claims and was funded by the federal funds. Widespread abuse and fraud led to a termination of the program and ultimately to a repudiation of any outstanding claims.
The $3s have short fold splits and the $5 has a bit of upper edge roughness. (Total: 4 notes)
