Description

Bangor, ME- Bangor Mill & Manufacturing Company Stock Certificate One Share / $10 Sep. 26, 1838 PMG Choice About Unc 58.
The Bangor Mill & Manufacturing Company "note" is in fact a stock certificate for ten shares, indicating that John Raymond was the owner. An 1842 bankruptcy filing for Raymond listing over $93,000 in stock from this company suggests that it did not end well for the company. The firm appears to have been in business circa 1836-1838 as evidenced by a request by the company to construct a canal and locks from Bangor to the Pushaw Lake in 1838. The certificate features a vignette of a sailor doffing his hat while holding the Stars and Stripes at left that also appeared on Government of Texas $50 notes issued around this time. Even though the penned year date looks like "1808," we believe in actuality that the date is "1838." Minor stains are mentioned on the PMG back label.
