Description

Mars Bluff, SC- J. Eli Gregg & Son 25¢ ND (1870s) Sheheen 1024 Remainder PMG About Uncirculated 50.
J. Eli Gregg and his son, Thomas E. Gregg, are both listed as merchants in the 1860 Federal Census. By 1870, the elder Gregg is listed as a farmer, Thomas E. Gregg is no longer associated with the business, and a younger son, Charles E. Gregg, is listed as a merchant, living in the same household. This scrip dates to the first decade or two after the Civil War based on the style of printing, the printer, and the printer's New York location. We have previously handled a 5¢ note with a handwritten date suggesting use during the war but the validity of that information may be in question. In any case, this is the only 25¢ note we have offered on this issuer, with PMG mentioning a POC in the signature line. The 1840s date stated by PMG on the front label is incorrect.
