Description

CTXX-1/B1 $20 1861 Female Riding Deer Bogus Note PMG Choice About Unc 58.
There are two views as to why the Female Riding Deer notes were produced. Some scholars theorize that they were a spurious design placed into circulation by unscrupulous individuals, with Samuel Upham later copying the layout to be utilized as a novelty item in the North. Others believe that Samuel Upham was, in fact, the originator of the type, and that it was intended as a souvenir which was later circulated by Union soldiers in the South. This piece is well printed on bright paper with striking colors and very broad margins. PMG mentions a very small stain in the upper left margin, outside of the frameline.
