CTXX-1/B1 $20 1861 Female Riding Deer Bogus Note PMG Choice About Unc 58.There are two views as to why the Female Riding Deer notes were produced. Some scholars theorize that they were a spurious design placed into circulation by unscrupulous individuals, with Samuel Upham later copying the layout to be utilized as a novelty item in the North. Others believe that Samuel Upham was, in fact, the originator of the type, and that it was intended as a souvenir which was later circulated by Union soldiers in the South. This piece is well printed on bright paper with striking colors and very broad margins. PMG mentions a very small stain in the upper left margin, outside of the frameline.
