Description

Interesting Smillie Correspondence. Two letters to Mrs. G.F.C. Smillie, one from the Smithsonian and one from the Library of Congress acknowledging contributions of her late husband's materials, and an interesting note in Smillie's hand bashing the new Peace Dollar design. In part, "Obverse: head all out of proportion, showing hydrocephalic symptoms - mad chin, unshapely heavy nose with broken bridge, protuberant forehead, and such a mass of hair on head atop and especially behind that it leaves art and [enters] into pathology. Reverse: misshapen and ugly eagle, etc., etc." Apparently Fred Smillie (as he liked to be called) did not like the new dollar very much. Est. 250up
