Description

Unique Sutton Red Seal

Sutton, WV- $20 1902 Red Seal Fr. 639 The First NB Ch. # (S)6213
By far the best National in Warren Burnside's collection, coming as it does from a hitherto unreported bank which liquidated in 1914 after issuing Red Seals and Date Backs only. Even Jim Thompson, with all of his enormous resources, could never obtain an example from this short lived bank. Although they were virtually neighbors, for years Mr. Burnside's West Virginia collection labored in the Thompson shadow, with dealers offering Thompson first shot on any significant West Virginia material they uncovered. This note, obtained locally by Mr. Burnside, was the one great note that Thompson never got. Bright Fine-Very Fine, with vivid color and no flaws whatever, a true West Virginia trophy note which will now, after more than a quarter century, move on to grace another great collection.
