This cataloguer has been buying, selling, cataloguing and collecting National Bank Notes for well over thirty years, and, in all of that time, and after handling literally thousands of Nationals, has never seen a First Charter five that could legitimately be graded as Gem Crisp Uncirculated. In fact, we have never graded such a note as gem on any price list or in any auction sale. We have now found the very first First Charter $5.00 note that meets all of the tests for the gem criteria. The paper quality is impeccable, the colors exceptionally vivid, the signatures perfect, and the margins ample or better all the way around. That this piece is an Original Series note is even more incredible, as Originals in any grade above CU are rare items indeed. This is a true connoisseur's note, the kind of item that the most advanced of collectors rarely if ever have the chance to obtain.
