Description

Fifty Dollar 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note

Fr. 192b $50 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note Choice Very Fine. Only thirteen examples of this number are known to exist, and only fifteen are known for the type. Of those fifteen, three are permanently impounded in museum or government hands, and two others grade Good or less. This example is extremely well margined, 100% natural, and without a hint of a problem or restoration. The bronze overprint has not darkened in the least, and this beautifully natural note is free of even so much as a pinhole. Only two examples in the census grade Extra Fine or better: one has been off the market for nearly a quarter of a century, and the other is in the ANA museum. In May of 1998, we sold a virtually identical piece to this for $36,300. This piece varies from that only in that the margins are considerably superior, and that makes it the equal of any held in public hands.
