Seldom Seen 1879 Refunding Certificate

Fr. 214 $10 1879 Refunding Certificate PMG Extremely Fine 40.
Last appearing in a 2003 auction, this always in demand Refunding Certificate is looking for a new home after spending over two decades off the market. Congress, in an attempt to allow the general public to more fully participate in the purchase of federal securities, passed the Act of February 26, 1879. The $10 "Refunding Certificates" which bore 4% interest were issued in two types. This $10 is one of the second type which was payable to bearer rather than a named individual. Today, only 173 examples of this popular type are known, and even though this note has a faded seal and date, it represents a tough type that not many collectors are able to add to their collection.
