Description

Attractive $5 Boston Demand Note

Fr. 3 $5 1861 Demand Note PMG Very Fine 25.
The earliest documentation for this $5 is a listing in an August 1981 Aubrey Beebe fixed price list. Its journeys next took it to a 1989 auction followed by the 1991 auction of The Jim Thompson Collection where it was acquired by Mike Coltrane. This note is a Series 2 example with dark signatures and sharp color on both sides. PMG does mention minor repairs which consist of professionally strengthening a couple of the vertical folds. The Civil War era note remains attractive with the face having the appearance of a higher grade. The last Fr. 3 that we auctioned in PMG VF 25 had closed pinholes and realized $6,600 in October 2021. Tonight's offering should make a serious run at that number.
