Rare and Popularly Collected T47 $20 "Fantasy" Note

T47 Fantasy Note $20 1862 PF-1 Cr. 345 Tremmel XX-2/A PMG Very Fine 30.
There is a lot of controversy around what exactly to call this note. The suggestions range from a fantasy to an essay to an experimental note (testing the use of printed signatures). The note is allegedly printed by Keatinge & Ball but this seems unlikely as the imprint reads "Keatings & Ball Columbus, SC." No self-respecting printer would let that out the door. An interesting, more recent theory is that Hoyer & Ludwig put this (and Type 48) out as a sort of "dirty trick" meant to discredit their competitor. Stranger things happened in the Confederate printer community. This is an evenly circulated example that is housed in a comment-free holder. It has been several years since we have sold an unimpaired example at this grade level and that note fetched $5,750 in 2012.
