Description

Rare Fr. 1225d

Fr. 1225d $10,000 1900 Gold Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.
A rare Friedberg number for this unredeemable note as the vast majority of examples of this type are Fr. 1225h's. The 20th edition of Friedberg states there are a meager three Fr. 1225d's known and with a value of only "Rare." Three is also the number listed on page 155 of The Comprehensive Catalog of U.S. Federal Large Size Notes, 1861 - 1929 by Carlson R. Chambliss and Gene Hessler. The note in tonight's auction must be in that census since it was first reported within currency collecting circles in June 1999. This is only our second offering of a Fr. 1225d. We had a PMG Very Fine 35 Net with three hole cancels realize $5875 in September 2016. The current piece was neatly cancelled in red pen on the face. PMG also cites contemporary annotations and minor repairs. The repairs are indeed minor, while the annotations only add to this note's charm. It was made payable in pen to the Second NB of Ashland, Kentucky. The annotations on the back shows the note traveling between Cincinnati, Ashland, KY, and finally coming to a rest at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. A note that is both interesting and rare.
