Description

Relics of 19th Century Banknote Design

Mixed Media Preparatory Sketches.
This lot includes a group of preparatory sketches from first part of the engraving and design process. They were intended for translation into engraving. One signed work faintly depicts an industrial landscape, while two others focus on a female angelic figure. The smaller of these is partially rendered in graphite, with the figure's hair intaglio printed. The rest of the design is sketched out as a guide for further engraving work. The largest composition represents more detailed design elements featuring a photographic element affixed to paper and surrounded by graphite sketches that suggest ongoing revisions. The back has "No. 18. TREAUSRY DEPARTMENT" printed at top to indicate this was work was done in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, a division of the Treasury Department. Whether the two allegorical works are in the hand of G.F.C. Smillie or Walter Shirlaw, they offer collectors and scholars a rare window into the creative process of one of the 19th century's most prolific banknote designers and decorative artists-whose works today reside in the collections of institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Academy of Design.
