Description

Shirlaw Graphite Drawing

Walter Shirlaw, (American, 1838-1909) Untitled, Graphite on Paper.
Walter Shirlaw was a 19th-century American artist who began his career in 1852 as a banknote engraver with the American Bank Note Company, and later joined the Western Bank Note Company. After studying art in Munich and Paris, he returned to New York City, where he established himself as a professional artist. Due to his growing reputation and notable commissions, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing selected Shirlaw-alongside William H. Low and Edwin Blashfield-to design denominations for the upcoming "Educational Series." His proposed vignette for the $5 note, Electricity Presenting Light to the World, would become the most iconic and celebrated design in the history of U.S. paper currency.

Likely a preparatory study for an engraving or mural, this composition features a classically draped male allegorical figure striding forward with arms outstretched, engaging with swirling, ribbon-like forms that encircle him. He is flanked by two secondary figures: an angelic figure on the left and a semi-nude female allegory on the right, both turned away from the viewer to direct focus toward the central figure. An architectural element featuring a five-pointed star reinforces the work's nationalistic undertones. The sketch reflects the 19th-century fascination with allegory and patriotic symbolism, themes that prominently shaped both fine art and American numismatic design during the period.
