Description

Premium Paper Quality Fr. 353

Fr. 353 $2 1890 Treasury Note PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ.
Premium paper quality is featured on this $2 that has been documented in the collecting community for many years with very few auction appearances. This deuce was once in the collection of Loyd Gettys, who was the president of the ANA from 1947-49. Its next appearance that we can find is as lot 1309 in the New York '80 auction that was held in conjunction with the short-lived New York Paper Money Convention. It would return to auction at our May 2011 Central States auction where it realized $16,675. Track and Price enumerates 271 examples of this Friedberg number, yet that figure only includes 23 pieces that have earned the coveted EPQ or PPQ grade modifier. The latest Fr. 353 to be offered at this third party grade level was another PCGS 58PPQ example that fetched $17,625 at the 2015 Memphis International Paper Money Show auction. Today, as even more emphasis is placed on EPQ/PPQ notes, we see that latest figure being quickly eclipsed.
