Description
Fr. 1215b $500 1882 Gold Face Proof Unlisted in Hessler
Fr. 1215b Type Hessler UNL $500 1882 Gold Certificate Face Proof
PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ.The Face $500 Gold Certificate Proof in this lot is of only the black ink designs without the plate letter. It was printed on India paper with imprint of "Bureau, Engraving & Printing" and mounted on broad margined bonded paper measuring overall approximately ten by nine inches. Abraham Lincoln's portrait is at left and "GOLD COIN" is printed in the lettering style that BEP employee George Washington Casilear received a patent for. The engraved Treasury officials signatures are B.K. Bruce and Jas. Gilfillan. The space at bottom center is left blank for a signature of the "Ass't Treasurer of U.S. New York City" which would have been Thomas C. Acton. Six-digit all zero serial numbers were perforated at lower left and upper right and deemed a hole punch cancellation by PCGS. Friedberg number 1215b is listed as unknown in the Friedberg reference with this Proof possibly being unique in private hands. Previously, this Proof was in The Joel R. Anderson Collection.
