Description

Possibly Unique Fr. 1201 1882 Gold Face Proof

Fr. 1201 Hessler UNL $100 1882 Gold Certificate Face Proof PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ.
This design is unlisted in Gene Hessler's second edition of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes. It is printed on India paper and mounted on broad margined bonded paper measuring overall approximately ten by nine inches. The familiar portrait of Thomas Hart Benjamin along with the other black ink design elements are present minus a plate letter. Six-digit all zero serial numbers were perforated at lower left and upper right and therefore PCGS declared this Face Proof as hole punched cancelled. At lower center is the "Bureau, Engraving & Printing" imprint. Engraved signatures are of Register of the Treasury B.K. Bruce and Treasurer of the United States Jas. Gilfillan.

This Face Proof is of a rare Friedberg number that has a recorded population of only eleven notes in Track & Price, with two each in the holdings of the Federal Reserve Banks of Richmond and San Francisco. However, a single Fr. 1201 has crossed the auction block in the last twelve years and that was when we auctioned a PMG VF 20 with comments example for $66,000 in January 2023. The Face Proof in this lot may well be unique and is a more economical way to acquire this Friedberg number. Previously, this Face Proof was once part of The Joel R. Anderson Collection.
