Description
Finer of Two Known
Motordale, MN - $20 1902 Plain Back Fr. 659 The First NB Ch. # (M)11550This twin cities area community began life as the town of Purity before changing its name to New Germany in 1902. When things German became unpopular due to the World War I induced anti-German hysteria following America's entry into that conflict in 1917, the town changed its name to Motordale, which became the first location for this bank, which received its charter in December of 1919. Within two years, with anti-German sentiment having subsided, the town fathers voted to retake the community's earlier name of New Germany, and the bank accordingly changed its issuing location in February of 1922. Only 900 sheets were printed with the Motordale nomenclature, and the census consists of just two examples, with this considerably the finer of the two. It makes its first auction appearance here, with the other specimen having sold in the Melamed collection sale for $5462.50. Nice PMG Very Fine 25, with two color signatures.
