Vermont's Only 14000 Charter Number
Poultney, VT - $5 1929 Ty. 2 The Poultney National Bank Ch. #
14234 Uncut Sheet of Three PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ.An uncut strip of three, this is a great rarity from Vermont's only 14000 charter bank. This Rutland County bank emitted just 301 notes across the $5 and $10 denominations in the year it operated before the cessation of National Bank Note production. The population figure of five has remained constant for charter number 14234 since at least the third edition of National Bank Notes by Don C. Kelly published in 1997. Today, the latest version of Track & Price still records only five notes. In fact, this uncut strip of three were the discovery notes from this bank as originally reported in the article at www.spmc.org - "The Only 14000 Series Vermont Charter Surfaces" in Paper Money, Society of Paper Money Collectors, September/October 1982, Vol. XXI, No. 5, Whole No. 101, page 219. Our current offering marks its very first auction appearance. All three notes display bold embossing and ideal color. The only handling observed are two folds between the notes. The bank closed in 1942 and Cashier J(ohn) E. Holmes was sentenced to 2 years on March 9, 1944, for mis-application of funds. President Elmo J. Hudson was also a doctor who retired in 1957 after being gored by a bull. He died on June 10, 1962.
