Description

Excessively Rare Fr. 406a

Mercer, PA - $5 1875 Fr. 406a The Farmers & Mechanics National Bank Ch. # 2256 PCGS Fine 15.
This excessively rare Friedberg number was not discovered until the mid-1990s and appears to have been issued by this bank only. Although various theories have been advanced as to why this note exists, the only one that makes sense to this cataloger is that the bank decided to change its plate layout in 1885 during the one month tenure of Bruce and Jordan, resulting in the engraving of a Series 1875 $5 plate bearing those signatures for this one institution alone. Whatever the reason, the new plate created a major signature rarity. The latest edition of the Friedberg catalog lists this number as "Rare" with four examples known. One of that number, this offering was last on the market in our 2014 Long Beach auction. The PCGS holder mentions multiple repairs and restorations and some of the design redrawn, but it does face up quite nicely with good color and dark pen signatures.
