Newly Discovered Serial Number 1 Wayland Brown Back

Serial Number 1 Wayland, NY - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 477 The First National Bank Ch. # 5196 PMG Extremely Fine 40.
A wonderful new discovery that is not only the first Brown Back of any denomination to be reported from this small bank that operated in New York's Southern Tier Region, it's also a serial number 1 note as well. The only number 1 note known from this Steuben County issuer, this 1-A $5 Brown Back is truly the first note from this institution that opened its doors in 1899. A treasured possession of a bank officer's family for over 120 years, it is now available for one fortunate collector to enjoy. As an aside, the Town of Wayland was the headquarters of the Gunlocke Chair Co., whose former manager, the late Howard W. Gunlocke, was an avid paper money collector who sought, for many years to no avail, to locate a Brown Back from his hometown bank. While this note has a few light storage folds, it retains its full ink colors and bold pen signatures. A great New York National for today's generation of collectors.
