Description

Unique for the Bank

Fort Edward, NY - $5 Original Fr. 397a The National Bank of Fort Edward Ch. # 1218 PCGS Banknote Very Fine 25.
A great New York rarity, this is the only note reported from this Washington County bank and an example that is making its first public appearance in over 20 years. While Fort Edward was the host to four note-issuing national banks, it is a town that is virtually impossible from which to locate a large size note. One bank remains unreported while the other three are represented in the census by a single large note apiece. This bank issued First Charters only before liquidating at the expiration of its charter in 1885 (when it was succeeded by the First National), with much of its Original Series issue and all of its 1875 issue made up of $50 notes. This offering made its lone public appearance in our 2005 FUN auction and has been held by our consignor since that time. It is a bright and attractive note with excellent color and signatures. PCGS Banknote has noted a small edge split which truly affects nothing on a rare note of this caliber.
