Description

One of Three Known

New York, NY - $5 1875 Fr. 404 The National Bank of the State of New York Ch. # 1476 PMG Choice Fine 15.
An extremely rare New York City bank, this institution issued just First Charter notes before bowing out in 1882. Just three notes are reported in the census, a pair of $5s and a $10, with one of the $5s listed without a grade or serial number. This is the other $5 and it made its last public appearance in our 2017 Long Beach auction. At that time, this pleasingly circulated piece which has nice color and signatures and is housed in a comment free holder, fetched $8,400. Considering it is just as rare today as it was seven years ago, this New York rarity certainly has the potential to approach that level again.
