Description

One of Two Known Petaluma National Gold Bank Notes

Petaluma, CA - $100 1874 Fr. 1165 The First National Gold Bank Ch. # 2193 PMG Very Good 10.
This note is a classic numismatic rarity, as it is one of just two known $100 examples from the First National Gold Bank of Petaluma and one of just nine $100 National Gold Bank Notes known from all banks combined, many of those nine are institutionally held or have not been seen for decades. This piece is also the only one of the known pair from this Petaluma bank to have made a public appearance in the past five decades. The note has a few minuscule restorations, all professionally done and not readily apparent without careful examination, but the signatures are clear and the color and overall appearance are certainly much higher than normally seen at this grade level. Three of the known $100 Gold Bank Notes have crossed the auction block since 2007, according to the National Currency Foundation census: this piece, along with examples from Oakland and Santa Barbara. While none of the three have graded better than Fine 12, all three easily exceeded the $200,000 threshold when the hammer fell. We expect no less once again from this very important piece of California financial history.
