First Issue Trial Color Proof
Milton 1DP25F.2 25¢ First Issue Off-Color Proof PMG Gem
Uncirculated 66 EPQ.We first sold this piece as part of the Friedberg Collection in 1997. It went on to be the O'Mara piece in 2005, and previously had been in the Chapman Brothers' Pick Collection on October 20, 1904 as lot 567. It's a perfect, deep, Proof impression that is printed in black on an oddly colored lemon yellow paper. The Chapmans described this ink as grayish smoky brown. It does have that appearance, but it is the result of black printing on pale lemon. It was referred to as unique 120 years ago, and to our best knowledge, remains so today. In 1904, it realized $16, which was a simply amazing price at the time. The last time we sold this note was in January of 2010, when it realized $5750.
