Description

Very Rare Red Serial Number Variety

Red Serial Number T22 $10 1861 PF-1 Cr. 250 PCGS Very Fine 30PPQ.
This always popular type was printed by Southern Bank Note Company (in actuality, the New Orleans branch of the ABNCo), with 58,860 notes issued between November 13, 1861 and May 15, 1862. Production was terminated with the fall of New Orleans to a Union naval task force at the end of April 1862. All pre-war vintage vignettes were used to expedite the design process. Orange counters and a large orange TEN protector panel completed the design. These orange design elements have retained their original color and show virtually no signs of oxidation. This example has serial number 17460 written in red ink. Only notes having serial numbers between 16901 and 18200 were written in that color. Shull estimates a known surviving population of somewhere between 11 and 20 notes.
