Description

Thomasville, NC- Thomasville Bank $10 Oct. 17, 1862 G4a PMG Very Fine 25.
Chartered by the state on February 23, 1861, this issuer remained in business until April 30, 1867, when it filed for a court supervised plan to go into voluntary receivership. A Commissioner (Receiver) was assigned by the court and creditors had until April 30, 1868, to file claims. Printed by Keatinge & Ball after the firm moved to Columbia, SC, in the spring of 1862, this note features a vignette of a large beehive, symbolizing industriousness flanked by others of Ceres seated at left and and of an allegorical woman (perhaps Commerce) seated on bales at right. A large red hollow letter TEN protector and a small vignette of hands shaking at bottom center complete the design. The note has had damage in the center of the right frame line restored and has staining along the bottom margin. The bank only issued $5s and $10s, with three times as many $5s as $10s emitted. Prior to the restoration previously mentioned, this note crossed the auction block for $2,880 in 2020 as part of The Mike Coltrane Collection. We are aware of just five $10s from this bank at present.
