Complete Fourth Liberty Loan $50 Bond

Fourth Liberty Loan 4 1/4% Gold Bond of 1933-1938 $50 Oct. 24, 1918 PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ.
A complete "long" term bond and only the fourth that we have offered of this issue and denomination. This E prefix example has all 36 coupons attached. Coupon numbers 1 through 4 were used for the previously obtained "short" term bond. The coupons on the "long" term bonds are numbered 5 through 40. This series is the only Federal bond issue in American history to default. The Fourth Liberty Loan was to be payable "in United States gold coin of the present standard of value." In 1933, a year before the Fourth Liberty Loan was to be called, Congress passed House Joint Resolution 192 which suspended payment in gold. A legal challenge to the default made its way to the Supreme Court, but was unsuccessful.
