Description

Corinth, MS- C.F. and R. Sawyers / "Confederate States Exchange" $3 1862 Kraus 55244 PMG Very Fine 20.
Reese P. Sawyers and Calliar F. Sawyers are both listed as merchants in census records and as residents of Corinth in an 1873 newspaper story. Your cataloger believes that the prominent term Confederate States Exchange was not the name of a firm, but rather a general patriotic statement that this note was an example of what served as day-to-day currency in the area. This note was undoubtedly issued early in 1862 as Corinth had fallen to Union forces in May. In addition to the Confederate States Exchange title, the note featured a portrait of Jefferson Davis, "our first President," that was flanked by a corner vignette of Ceres holding an oval view of a steamboat at left and another of slaves working in a field at right. Always popular due to its Davis portrait and the title Confederate States Exchange.
