Description

Westfield, MA- Westfield Bank $1-$2-$3-$5 18__ G2-G4-G6-G8 Uncut Proof Sheet PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
The Westfield Bank was incorporated on May 24, 1851, and quickly became a well respected institution. In 1864, the organization was succeeded by the First National Bank of Westfield, charter 190. Proofs from this bank are elusive, but uncut Proof sheets are prohibitively rare. In fact, we have only auctioned one uncut Proof sheet from this concern previously, and that representative was none other than the one in this lot. It last achieved $2,400 as part of our September 2018 Long Beach Expo Currency Signature Auction. All four notes contained within this sheet include a wide variety of beautiful vignettes. On the ace is a portrait of Zachary Taylor at left, a Native American gazing into the distance pensively at "Civilization" at upper center, a water nymph at lower center, and a cameo-like medallion bust of William Shakespeare at right. On the deuce is the Massachusetts state arms at left, two allegorical females at upper center, a fish at lower center, and two Native Americans at right. We find dogs chasing a bird around a tree at left, three industrious individuals conversing at upper center, a dog with a safe symbolizing Fidelity at lower center, and a teacher mentoring her students with a globe at right on the $3. The last note in the sheet, a $5, showcases a sailor leaning on a capstan with a woman and two children seated near his feet and a blacksmith standing behind him at left and a view of Westfield Green at center. All four notes are printed on India paper mounted to a large piece of cardstock with four punch cancels in the signature lines of each of the $1, $2, and $5 examples and five punch cancels in the signature spaces of the $3. This sheet was part of Lot 769 of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and is believed to be unique at present.
