Gem Uncirculated Fairbanks Note- Perhaps the Finest Known

Fairbanks, AK - $5 1929 Ty. 2 First National Bank Ch. # 7718 PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
This is a truly wonderful Alaska note that is also the first 1929 Series example from this far northern bank to appear on the market since we offered this very same piece in our 2011 Long Beach auction. At that time, we said, "A fabulous note with an illustrious pedigree. It first made its appearance when it was part of an uncut pair that was purchased in Minnesota by John Hickman and his then partner, John Waters, who promptly consigned it to Harmer-Rooke's celebrated Million Dollar sale in 1969. It was acquired there by Amon Carter, Jr. Amon subsequently cut the pair and cannily recouped nearly his entire investment by selling his duplicate to Washington, DC, dealer Phil Lampkin. Phil sold it to a collector putting together a definitive set of small size $5 Nationals, and, upon that collector's demise, it was acquired by well known Ohio dealer Don Kelly, where it remained in his personal holdings for several years. Unlike large size Fairbanks notes, where the census is skewed by the hoard of Uncirculated Red Seals unearthed in 1967, only three small notes are listed as CU: this piece, its pair mate from years ago, and one other example which has long been reported, but reputedly has been in the hands of a prominent Alaska collector for several decades." Now, after almost fourteen years, another opportunity has arisen for one fortunate collector to acquire this wonderful Fairbanks note or any Fairbanks small size for that matter. Any estimate on this bright, well margined, and embossed $5 is just a matter of conjecture so we will let the bidders decide who takes home this trophy note tonight.
