Tied for Finest Known Fr. 1365 No Loop Variety
No Loop Variety Fr. 1365 Milton 3R50.10j 50¢ Third Issue Justice
PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ.The rare No Loop Fr. 1365 variety in this lot is tied with the finest known third party graded example. It comes from the family of a respected collector whose main Fractional collection was auctioned in September 1981. When we auctioned the Milton Friedberg 3R50.10j in January 1997, it was the sole known example. Since then, a few more have made themselves known to the collector community. Two strangely configured BEP plates produced the No Loop variety. The information in the rest of this description comes from an article written by Tom Knebl. It is titled, "Justice Prevailed" and is found in, Paper Money, Society of Paper Money Collectors, January/February 1978, Vol. XVII, No. 1, Whole No. 73, pages 16-18. The Knebl article relied heavily on an earlier Paper Money article written and researched by Martin Gengerke, "Fractional Currency Plate Information Second and Third Issues", Second Quarter 1972, Vol. XI, No. 2, Whole No. 42, pages 80-85. The two oddly configured face plates were plate 62, a 30-subject plate arranged in three columns of ten notes with the design letter 'a' on the ten notes in the left-hand column, and plate 5, an identically configured 30-subject plate with the design letter 'a' on the top three notes. On the normally configured plate of twelve subjects, Spinner's large engraved signature goes off the notes on the right edge and intrudes slightly into the left edge design of its right-hand neighbors, therefore the two notes with only the design letter 'a' would show this signature loop. Any 'a' Justice without the signature loop in the lower left corner and having any sort of left margin or is not trimmed into the design, would have to come from plate 62 or the upper left corner of plate 5. The last No Loop example that crossed our auction block was another PMG 58 EPQ example that realized $2,640 in September 2020. Our current offering should achieve as much, if not more.
