Description

Boston, MA- Hide & Leather Bank $3 Aug. 1, 1859 G6a PCGS Banknote Fine 12.
The Hide & Leather Bank was chartered in 1857 and remained in business until becoming the National Hide and Leather Bank of Boston, charter 460. Genuine notes from this concern are nearly impossible to locate, and this $3 is no exception. At left, Liberty reclines with a pole and cap, federal shield, and cornucopia, and at center, a worker dresses leather at right while a seamstress assembles boots. The two individuals are separated by a large "3" die counter. A dark red "THREE" overprint at bottom center completes the design. We have only auctioned one genuinely issued, unraised note from this institution prior to now, a PCGS Apparent VF 20 certified ace which realized $1,955 in January 2011. Perhaps three or four examples of this design are currently known, but notes from this institution are tightly held by collectors. Thus, the representative in this lot presents the perfect opportunity to procure a prohibitively elusive piece which will likely not leave the next collection it graces for years to come.
