Issued Continental Bank $3 with Terrific Polar Bear Vignette

Boston, MA- Continental Bank $3 Oct. 1, 1862 G6a PCGS Banknote Very Fine 20.
The $3 design features a portrait of General Joseph Warren at lower right, the individual responsible for dispatching Paul Revere on his famed "Midnight Ride." Warren also volunteered to repel the British assault on Breed's Hill during the Battle of Bunker Hill and defended his position at the redoubt until he was mortally wounded. At center is the historical De Witt Clinton Hay depiction of a polar bear viciously attacking four explorers manning a rowboat who attempt to fend off its attack with oars. The men's ship can be observed in the background. At left is the state auditor's seal. Complementing the layout is a light green border and micro-letter overprint at lower center. While $3 remainders from this concern are relatively obtainable, the same cannot be said for issued representatives. This piece is one of two issued examples for this design and denomination that we are aware of. The other known example sold in 2011 for $2,185. We have not auctioned any genuine issued notes from this bank previously. Our current offering could very well attain or even outperform the aforementioned price, as chances to acquire a Massachusetts Obsolete of this caliber and rarity do not present themselves often.
