Spectacular Error Note

Boston, MA- Bank of Commerce $3 18__ G12b PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 64.
The bank was organized in 1850 and remained in business until becoming the National Bank of Commerce of Boston in 1864. An amazing note, this example has a very unusual red concentric circle protector at center paired with a dark yellow / brown-orange tint with the denomination appearing in reverse (white) letters. The tint is similar to one known as Seropyan's Patent. Christopher D. Seropyan from New Haven developed this special tint as an anti-counterfeiting measure in the 1850s, for which he filed a patent that was granted in 1857. A vignette of a sailor standing by a capstan is at left and a portrait of Nathaniel Bowditch (a noted mathematician credited as the founder of modern marine navigation) at right. Interestingly, the white counter incorporated in the brown-orange tint is TWO rather than (presumably) THREE, creating a very obvious error. Haxby reports that all known examples of this note (around 3-4 notes) have this error. This Face Proof has six punch out cancellations and PCGS Banknote mentions that the note is stained. An unusual note that is sure to be a featured holding in any collection to which it is added.
