Description

Boston, MA- Boston Bank $50 186__ G110a Proof PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 64.
The Boston Bank was one of the earliest commercial banks established in the state, being incorporated in 1803 and remaining in business until becoming the Old Boston National Bank in 1865. This title was apparently used because the Boston National Bank title had been assigned a year earlier. This attractive ABNCo produced note features a busy nautical scene with a man-of-war and several commercial vessels off Boston at center flanked by the Massachusetts coat of arms at left and a vignette of Liberty seated, holding the city seal of Boston. The Bunker Hill Monument, completed in 1843, can be seen in the distance and actually seems to have been subtly added to the image of the city seal. A large green FIFTY protector completes the design. Also included in this lot are two Die Proofs of the city seal bearing the imprints of both Edmonds, Jones, & Smillie, the short-lived firm who created it originally and the ABNCo who used the design after 1861. The note is printed on India paper with four POCs in the signature lines. PCGS Banknote mentions a minor mounting remnant on the back which is of virtually no consequence. Formerly a holding in The Peter Mayer Collection, this note and the two Die Proofs crossed the auction block for $8,812 in 2014. Our conservative low estimate will allow bidders to determine this great rarity's worth in today's market. (Total: 3 items)
