Description

Kansas City, MO - $10 1875 Fr. 420 The Citizens NB Ch. # 2613
An excessively rare Kansas City bank which issued Series 1875 examples only before closing its doors forever in 1898. Three notes are reported, a $20 which was last offered as part of the Fred Sweeney Missouri collection in 1981, a second $20 which we sold as part of the Missouri collection that was the backbone of our first CAA sale in 1990, and a $10 which sold at auction less than a year later...and then nothing for twenty years. We are pleased to offer this newly discovered piece, which is considerably nicer than any of the three others. It is a vividly bright pen signed and utterly gorgeous EF which PMG has graded Choice Very Fine 35, which would be irritating enough by itself, but the graders then outdid themselves by remarking about a "small tear." Since the note was not net graded, we can only conclude that the "tear" they refer to is a miniscule fragment of paper left on the bottom margin when the note was cut at the bank, and which of course is neither a "tear" or has anything whatever to do with the grade of the note. We'll defer to our bidders here, who we suspect know enough about Nationals to buy the note rather than the holder.
