Description
Four Consecutive Examples of the King of Popular Large Size Types
Fr. 268 $5 1896 Silver Certificate PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ.The first of an unbelievably nice group of high-end AU consecutive Five Dollar Educationals. Although there are four consecutive notes, they are not a Cut Sheet, as the plate numbers run B, C, D, A. This first note has broad margins, incredibly fresh color, and all the eye appeal in the world. All four notes come from the Northeast Hoard, a group of about 80 Type Notes that all share the common characteristic of perfect paper and ink color. They were clearly all carefully stored, and whether uncirculated or Extra Fine, all have the look of Superb Gems. These four Educational Fives share a light bend-type center fold that has held them back from the Gem grade. Save for that, they are as fresh, nice and original as any Five Dollar Educationals that this cataloger has ever seen. All four are simply spectacular examples of what is arguably the pinnacle of 19th Century design and engraving. Worth far in excess of the typical 58PPQ price, whether singly or as a group.
