Description

Salisbury, NC - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 467 The First NB Ch. # 2981
A letter perfect $5 Brown Back which is by far the finest example we have ever seen from any North Carolina issuer. Only the fortuitous emergence of ten pieces (two and a half cut sheets) from this Salisbury bank has allowed collectors to aspire to an uncirculated North Carolina Brown Back, as not one of the other nearly 135 North Carolina Brown Backs of all denominations listed in the new census is recorded as uncirculated. The originality and embossing of this piece must truly be seen to be believed. Every element is well nigh magnificent, and the note appears to have been printed and pen signed this morning. The state seal found on the reverse is the first of two used on notes from the Tarheel State. It features an uncomplicated design displaying two buxom women, Ceres and Justice, with the figure of Justice holding a pole which is topped by a Liberty Cap. No state motto is present, although the second seal contains the words Esse Quam Videri, "To Be, Rather Than to Seem", a rather obscure quotation taken from Cicero's Essay on Friendship. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
