Toms River, NJ - $20 1875 Fr. 434 The First NB Ch. # 2509
A great note which is one of only seventeen Series 1875 twenties known from all New Jersey charters combined. More than a dozen of that number are graded Fine or below, or have no grades assigned in the National Bank Note census, with the only high grade examples coming from a group of five pieces from the First NB of Toms River. All have been ensconced in major New Jersey holdings for many years, with the last offering of any coming a dozen years ago in a 2001 auction. This is a singularly attractive piece, with colors as bright as the day the note was printed, great eye appeal, and the appearance of a fully uncirculated note through the PCGS holder. As a bonus, the autograph signature of Treasurer of the U.S. John Burke can be found above the penned signature of the bank's president. The central vignette on the reverse, the Baptism of Pocahontas, which is often fuzzy or badly printed, is photographic in its detail. The New Jersey state seal, which was used on both First Charters and Brown Backs, is a slightly modified version of the seal adopted in 1776. It shows three plowshares on a central shield, supported on the left by Ceres and on the right by Liberty. The crest is a helmet topped by a horse's head, and at the bottom is a cornucopia, a device not part of the state's official seal. The motto "Liberty & Prosperity" on a streamer is found at the bottom. Extremely Fine 45.
