Description

T20 $20 1861 PF-5 Cr. 141. Trans-Mississippi Stamp.
A cut cancel repair led to the Very Fine 25 Net grade by PMG. A red circular stamp dated February 1864 is seen. The closing of the Mississippi River by Union troops in the summer of 1863 disrupted communications and thus prevented the Trans-Mississippi Department from receiving funds to buy supplies and pay the soldiers. In some cases, soldiers were not paid for a year or more. Needless to say that led to extreme dissatisfaction, and in some cases, desertions.
