Unique Farmers & Citizens Lazy Deuce

Brooklyn, NY - $2 Original Fr. 387 The Farmers & Citizens NB Ch. # 1223
This wonderful New York rarity made its only appearance at public auction since 1938 when we sold it as part of the Collection of a Gentleman sale in October, 1998. We described it there as "One of the great notes of this collection, and a true miracle of survival. This is both unique to the bank and unique as a type from Brooklyn. This bank, located in the Williamsburgh section of Brooklyn, became the first national bank on Long Island to fail, after having been in business under a national charter for only two years from 1865 to 1867. By 1915, only $942 was outstanding. The note can be traced back to a 1938 auction sale, then to the James M. Wade collection. It was purchased, after very considerable negotiation, from Aubrey Beebe in 1972 by your cataloguer, and, when his set of New York City Nationals was dispersed, passed to the current consignor. Very Fine, a true wonder note certain to become one of the high points of the collection it now enters." Estimated there at $3000-6000, it blew through the high estimate to close at $7150. A couple of other deuces from Brooklyn have since been uncovered, but nothing at all has surfaced from this excessively short lived bank. Now in a PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25 holder, with a comment about the quite insignificant restorations at the top edge, it is anyone's guess what the right price will be for this unique item tonight. One thing that is certain however, is that no matter what is paid, another can not be obtained at any price.
